Unmissable on the corner of Nanjing Dong Lu and the Bund, this Renaissance- style Shanghai landmark hotel was known as the Cathay, Shanghai’s most prestigious accommodation. The hotel has just celebrated its centenary and is still one of the places to stay in Shanghai, in spite of its mediocre service and ever increasing competition.
The hotel has a North and South Wing, the former of which is a little newer, dating from 1929. Although the hotel’s rooms are still elegantly furnished, the cheaper ones (especially in the North Wing) can be a little gloomy and don’t live up to the opulence of the lobby.
However, it’s a different story if you can afford the deluxe national rooms that have been kept in their original style, albeit with a few necessary modernizations. There are numerous restaurants, a lively jazz bar and a museum tracing the hotel’s history. The Peace Hotel is definitely worth a visit, but maybe not a stay. The hotel has wheelchair access.
